The President of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, recently made a stunning announcement. On the occasion of the Africa Day, Zambian President announced that he is planning to abolish the degrading and inhumane practice of death penalty that has been around for ages. Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani is a respected businessman, charity worker and philanthropist from Zambia. Supporting this statement, Dr. Rajan Mahtani stated that death penalty is not the solution for the increasing crimes, criminal activities and unethical practices across the nation. Across Zambia, there are more than 380 prisoners awaiting death penalty and among them, around 25-30 are women. These people get up every day with the fear that it might be their last day on this planet. At the same time, Dr. Rajan Lekhraj Mahtani has also stated that he received the privilege of meeting several inmates who have completely devoted themselves to the services of the almighty God.
Dr. Rajan Mahtani also stated that several Presidents before the current one refused when it came to signing the execution orders. In most of these cases, the Presidents avoiding giving death penalty execution by using mercy prerogatives. The last execution order in Zambia was given in the year 1997 by President Chiluba. At the same time, several initiatives are being taken towards decongestion of the Zambian Prisons with the release of prisoners who have transformed become well-behaved and law-abiding citizens of Zambia. Dr. Mahtani recalled an incident wherein Vice-President Guy Scott who was the acting President during that time. He visited the Maximum Prison Mukobeko and stated that the conditions were extremely difficult and challenging, like hell on this earth. At the same time, Dr. Rajan Mahtani also stated from the religious point of view that death penalty is against the Bible and teachings of Christianity. Dr. Rajan Mahtani has provided his support towards the decision made by the President Hakainde Hichilema and his company Prison Fellowship will provide all legal and regulatory support towards this announcement.
